"The Unwanted"
by John F. Arnold, ©1995

A lullaby that won't be sung,
A story left untold;
The bassinet stands silently
With nothing small to hold.

On Christmas Eve when snowflakes fall
And all the world is white,
When quiet joy invades the town
And trembles in the night

And trees are bright with Christmas light
And carols sing "Good will,"
Will anyone remember
There's one stocking less to fill?

No fuzzy bear - no rocking chair,
No brightly painted sled.
No "Now I lay me down to sleep"
Beside a tiny bed.

One doll not on the Christmas list,
One baseball bat and glove,
And looking close you'll notice
There's one portion less of love.

And in the spring - the playground swing
The slide and see-saw too
For just a while stand motionless
As if they're missing you.

The sandbox games the children play,
The music of their joy -
It's silent where you might have laughed,
Dear little girl or boy.

There was a time not long ago,
A very special day:
You stood outside the door and knocked
And someone turned away.

Yes, someone else decided
That your life was not to be,
And the reasons were as varied
As the waves upon the sea.

For they never did consider this,
That makes it all so sad:
The life that they denied you
Was the only life you had.

I like to think a loving God
Will soothe away your scars,
And find a special place for you
Among His shining stars -

A place of soft and downy clouds,
Of baby pink and blue,
Where angels singing lullabyes
Will sing them just for you.

I like to think you're smiling now
As heaven's fields you roam,
And fear no more the closing door;
I like to think - you're Home!

LET US PRAY!

Lord, grant that I may always seek to be loving toward my fellow himan beings. Grant that I may be charitable toward those involved with abortion, that through my actions they may see You and know that You love them and await their repentant visit to Your loving arms. Thank You, Lord, for the gift of life. Amen.

The above prayer and poem appeared in the November - December, 1995 issue of "Celebrate Life!", the magazine of the American Life League.
